Actually, working in a call center requires quite a bit of thought (though granted not very much originality). :P But the point is an excellent one. I think that chimpanzees, for example, can by and large be considered "human." And, of course, if there is ever such a thing as sapient artificial intelligence, no one will care because we can just "turn it off," and that won't be considered equivalent to "turning off" a "human" life.
