Road Trip - Day 8 - Dallas & Jackie

Thursday July 13, 2000

We were supposed to get up at 9 to get to the 10:30 Imax show, but I woke up a bit earlier. I had wanted to go out to my car and get my journal to write a bit before Jill got up, but they have a security system on the house, so I couldn’t open the door without setting it off. So I just sat and watched Star Trek for a few minutes.

After a bit we got moving and Jill & I went to the Imax. Cirque du Solie was playing, the Vegas show made a movie in 3D Imax called “Journey of Man” which was about the life of a man, but they told the short mostly substance-less story with lots of the acrobatics thrown in. There wasn’t really too much point to the storyline, just something they added to make some connection for the acrobatics to follow. Desptie being overprices and very short it was a good show. The 3D was pretty cool to see on an Imax screen.

After that we dorve to Jill’s dad’s office. She drives rather fast and switches lanes ALOT. Often she was in the far left lane, then she would cross 4 lanes to the far right one, and cross back again. Normally I’d be freaking out, but either because I was sorta driving like that the last day or two, or because I was just calmed since I would soon see Jackie, but I was very calm while Jill was driving.

We got to her dad’s office and the employees started making fun of me right away, hehe. They asked if I got into a fight with a vacuum cleaner, a standard reference to my birthmark. Her dad had a picture up in his office of all the Disney characters having sex with each other. He said it was a rare painting from the sixites.

He was President of a company that recycled steel. For example if you bring tools back to Sears and return them, Sears can’t resell them so they sell them to Jill’s dad’s company and they melt them down. He gave me a tour of the place, it looked kinda like Padnos in Holland, piles of steel and junk all over the place. We rode around in a golf cart.

After a bit we went out to dinner, the three of us met up with Jill’s sister at Cheddars. Again we tried to figure out what to do, but it was decided to go to the West End. It was about 2 or so, and I really didn’t care enought o go anywhere but Houston. As I sat in Jill’s car driving to the West End all I could think about is seeing Jackie. I was going to tell Jill to just forget it so I could leave earlier, but I worried it would be a bit rude to just take off so soon. SO I bit my tounge and went on.

The West End was a mall in an old part of Dallas. There was a western store there that had a policy forbidding people under 21 from entering without a parent. Just a few blocks down from the mall was the place where Kennedy was shot. I thought that was facinating. Just being able to see everythign about it. My whole life I have seen the assassination over and over from a certain point of view. Having my thoughts channeled by the narrow scope of the Zapruder film is a bit frustrating. Seeing it for myself and seeing it from all angles was a bit liberating for me. Now when I think of the JFK assassination I’m not limited by any film.

After that we got back to Jill’s and I took off immediately. The thought that I was mere hours away from finally seeing Jackie just electrified me. I left around 4:30 and sped the whole way. I absolutely couldn’t wait to see her finally.

I was supposed to print out maps while I was at Jill’s but I forgot about that too, so I had to call and get directions from Jackie’s parents. As I was getting close I was amazingly excited/nervous, my stomach was in my throat as I was driving. 2 months! I’m going to see her!!

I pulled into her driveway around 9:30 expecting her to come out of the house, but instead she ran up behind me from the street side. It was such a joyous moment, she just ran to me and we embraced. I can hardly describe the feeling of happiness in tha moment. Holding her there while standing in the driveway, was a wonderful feeling. We just stood there for what seemed like forever just holding each other. IT seems she walked down the street to wait for me but I didn’t see her. After I drove by she had to run to catch up to me. So she was out of breath as we stood there. It was a bit dark and I couldn’t even see her totally clearly, but it felt so good.

After a while we went into her house, we had to be careful since Jackie’s parents don’t know about us and we can’t give it away. We got inside and talked for a bit with her parents. I then prodded Jackie for a tour of her house, we ended up in her bedroom. It was a nice room, lots of books, stuffed animals, and lots of knick-knacks. We sat there holding each other for a bit longer and then went off to Denny’s to get something to eat. Jackie drove. It was so weird to see her drive a car. She just seems so small and almost child-like, watching her drive around was such a novel experience.

We ate and then got back to her house & went to sleep. She has a nice house, but it is one of these phony, new rich neighborhoods.

I argued with the manager a bit, and then I took a business card with their information on it, and I meant to deal with it when I got back. I still have that card, but I never did do anything about it…
